IN CONJUNCTION with the 2014 Knowledge Convention, two exhibitions have been set up and are opened for the public.

The two exhibitions focus on the chosen theme of “Science and Technology” and how it has helped the nation to develop.

Balai Kenangan Al-Marhum Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien under His Majesty’s Office set up one of the exhibits, which showcases the contribution of both His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and Al-Marhum Sultan Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien.

An officer in charge of the Balai Kenangan exhibition said that the exhibition is intended to celebrate the role of both leaders in the nation’s development. Additionally, it also serves to show the key role played by the Istana.

To illustrate this, a model of the Istana Nurul Iman is featured as the centrepiece of the displays, and is surrounded by a model of buildings of each of the ministries.

The officer said that the model of the Istana is slightly elevated and symbolises His Majesty overseeing the implementation of policies set out in the Titah.

Also on display inside the Balai Kenangan exhibition were historical artifacts. A section was also provided for the Brunei Arts and Handicraft Centre to showcase local handicrafts and fabrics.

Meanwhile, the other exhibition organised by the Ministry of Development (MoD) features displays from various government and private institutions.

With the theme of science and technology, MoD focused primarily on the role of water for this knowledge conventions and its importance in birthing life.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has set up displays which shows the water treatment process and how advances in science and technology have updated the process.

An officer who wishes to remain anonymous said that previously, water was filtered using sand and rocks, but at the moment, a polymer is used instead in the filtration process. MoD also has several booths set up displaying the various projects that they are currently undertaking.

Among the booths set up include models and videos of the new proposed housing scheme in Lugu and Lambak Kanan, where MoD are planning to do clustered and high-rise houses.

At the end of the hall, Balai Pameran Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and Darusysyifa’ Warrafahah co-organised an exhibition on the benefits of water.

Over at the other end of the hall, the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) has set up an interactive lights and sound display.

A “green” house, powered by solar panels, was also set up just outside of the exhibition hall to demonstrate energy-saving appliances as well as green house designs.

Also taking part in the exhibitions are Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) among others.

The knowledge convention was launched yesterday by His Majesty, and the exhibition is open to the public until November 4.
