REPAIR works have started for a family of seven’s Kg Pelambaian house that collapsed into the Brunei River last month.

The Brunei-Muara District Office, Fire and Rescue Department and villagers have teamed up to clear the debris of the collapsed house at Mukim Kota Batu yesterday.

In an interview, Village Head of Kg Pelambaian Hj Hanipah Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Hj Juned said repair works had begun since the 15-year old house collapsed last month.

“We started off with the roof and its walls. During the time (of the collapse), I just told the villagers and the (village) committee members to go ahead with the demolishment and clear the house’s debris,” he said on the sidelines of a gotong-royong (community work).

It was previously reported that the house gave way last month, and all inhabitants had evacuated the wooden stilt house before the incident happened.

The village head explained that inhabitants of the house are currently staying at their relatives, adding that the family has also expressed their desire to return to their home.

InsyaAllah, we will continue to work and provide them assistance in the reconstruction of their home. It would be better for them for their own comfort and future plans,” added the village head.

Hj Hanipah further said that the villagers have expressed the high value they place on providing assistance to others who need help in the village.

“The existence and maintenance of our neighbourly ties are important to us,” he said.

Over 120 individuals comprising villagers and government agencies turned up for the community work, where some of the furniture was still seen in what is left of the house.
