THE South Korean community in Brunei celebrated the National Foundation Day of South Korea at the Rizqun International Hotel last night.

In his welcoming message during the reception, the South Korean Ambassador to Brunei His Excellency Choi Byung-Koo highlighted the importance of ASEAN to South Korea and the established diplomatic relations with its member countries, especially with the ASEAN Community 2015 drawing closer.

“Cooperation within the ASEAN framework has also been pivotal in our relationship. Since establishing Dialogue relations in 1989, Korea and ASEAN have worked together and, in the process, our two countries have maintained closer consultation as had been seen last year here in Brunei,” he said.

Additionally, in celebrating the 25 year anniversary of the Korea-ASEAN Dialogue Partnership, the ambassador shared that South Korea will host the ASEAN-Korea Commemorative Summit in December.

Themed ‘A Companion of Trust and Happiness’, the summit is aimed to be a platform to further expand Korean ties with ASEAN.

The ambassador also expressed his happiness as Brunei and South Korea is celebrating its 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties and has been in an excellent shape. He further noted that the partnership between the two nations has proven to be beneficial for both and has contributed to the development of the regional community.

“More Korean companies are having an eye on Brunei. The people-to-people exchanges have been increasing. Nowadays many Bruneian students are staying in Korea for study. Having witnessed these developments, I am confident that our two countries are entering into a new phase for closer cooperation,” he added.
