Walkathon held to mark World Heart Day

MORE than 100 people turned up yesterday morning to take part in a walkathon held to mark World Heart Day and the National Campaign in Combating Non-Communicable Diseases.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) and Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre organised the walkathon which was held in front of the ministry’s Dewan Al-‘Afiah.

Present to launch of the walkathon was Minister of Health Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof.

Speaking at the walkathon yesterday, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre Dr Peter Tay said World Heart Day is celebrated every September 29 since 2000.

Dr Tay said Brunei is this year adopting the theme “Heart-Healthy Environments” for the World Heart Day observation, which ties in with the National Campaign in Combating Non-Communicable Diseases.

Statistics on non-communicable diseases from the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimated that 80 per cent of deaths in the country were caused by non-communicable diseases in 2012.

Cardiovascular diseases were identified as the main cause of death in the country, where it caused twice the amount of death compared to cancer. Cardiovascular diseases accounted for 34 per cent of the total deaths, while cancer came in second with 17 per cent.

The statistics also showed that 11 per cent of deaths were caused by diabetes, whereas chronic respiratory diseases accounted for seven per cent of deaths.

WHO stated in its statistics that the chance of an individual between the ages of 30 until 70 dying from the four main non-communicable diseases stood at 17 per cent.

A statement from MoH said the walkathon was held to highlight the importance of physical activities as well as promote a healthy and conducive environment.

It was also aimed at raising public awareness of the risk factors that contribute to strokes and cardiovascular diseases.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Adanan led the group during the 2km walkathon towards the Jalan Menteri Besar Recreational Park before proceeding to view some of the activities held at the exhibition hall.

The minister also presented a prize to Pg Hj Annuar Husaini Pg Lt Col (Rtd) Hj Rambli, winner of the logo creation contest for the National Campaign in Combating Non-Communicable Diseases 2014.
