YAYASAN Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) schools are encouraging their students to practise the English language through a campaign that was launched yesterday.

The “Speak More English” campaign aims to raise the standards of students’ spoken and written English.

YSHHB said the school wants to provide opportunities for students to practise their oratory skills and feel comfortable using English outside classrooms.

The school would be implementing co-curricular activities that tie in with monthly themes to help the students.

Apart from that, the programme also aims to develop the habit of speaking English among the students, foster a sense of pride and confidence when communicating in English and increase their appreciation of the language.

The school said parents have a role to play in helping to promote the use of the English language.

They advised parents to use English with their children when on school grounds, as well as encouraging their children to read English books and watch English-language movies.

The students are encouraged to speak English but the importance of the Malay language remains a priority, said the school, adding that the latter is “a key component of the nation’s identity”.

The school said, “The programme’s relevance is seen in the context of its further promotion alongside the active propagation of Malay and inculcation of traditional Malay and Islamic values”.

Present at the launching ceremony yesterday was Managing Director of YSHHB Hj Brahim Hj Ismail.

During the launch, the guest of honour was treated to performances by kindergarten, primary and secondary students.

They then unravelled a banner in front of the managing director to officially launch the campaign.

Also present at the launch were His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s grandchildren - YAM Pengiran Anak 'Abdul Raqiib Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Hj Abdul Rahim, YAM Pengiran Anak Raqeeqah Raayatul Bolqiah Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Hj Abdul Rahim and YAM Pengiran Anak Abdul Hafeez Pengiran Anak Khairul Khalil.
