ALMOST 2,000 runners participated in the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) “Green Run” to promote environmental awareness as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Organised by the university’s Office of Alumni Relations and Advancement, the run was also aimed at raising funds for the construction of its alumni building, which is expected to be completed next year.

Five categories were competed, the 9.5km Eco Friendly (male open), 9.5km Eco Friendly (female open), 5.2km Ecological (male open), 5.2km Ecological (female open) and 3.3 Green Community Run, a fun run category opened for members of the public.

Emerging as the champion for the 9.5km Eco Friendly (male open) category was Brunei’s top marathon runner Sefli Ahar, beating Mike Hobbis and Sunny Jong Shi Xian who came second and third respectively.

For the 9.5km Eco Friendly (female open), Yvette Korte Kaas won first place, while Fishy Leong Sheo Yee and Jenny Kamp were placed second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Lim Wei Kwang was the victor in the 5.2 Ecological (male open), while Sarah Powdrill topped the 5.2 Ecological (female open) category.

Present as the guest of honour and joining the event was UBD Vice-chancellor Dato Paduka Dr Hj Zulkarnain, who later presented cash prizes to the winners of each category.

During the prize presentation, it was announced that about 1,088 kilogrammes of recyclables were collected during the shirt collection period as it was compulsory for all registered runners to provide at least one plastic bottle, old newspapers, or any recyclable materials in exchange for their running kit.

The initiative is part of the advocacy of The Green Apeel, one of the event partners for UBD Green Run, to promote a greener lifestyle by encouraging recycling activities and making the run as environmentally friendly as possible.

Apart from promoting a healthy lifestyle and environmental awareness, the UBD Green Run was also held to raise awareness of Office of Alumni Relations and Advancement, which is responsible in strengthening relations between UBD and its alumni.

Prior to the flag off, a warm-up session was conducted by Fitness Zone trainers.
