THE Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre (PTES) has emerged victorious after defeating their opponent, the Paduka Seri Begawan Science (Maktab Sains) Team during the 18th Inter-School Senior Debate Competition.

The team won against their opponent that also played host for this year’s event, by arguing against the motion: “This house believes that science is a threat to humanity”.

The Acting Principal of Maktab Sains, Dr Hjh Zurina Hj Harun, in her welcoming speech expressed her appreciation at having to host the annual debate and urged students to consider taking up debate for the many benefits that may prove useful for the students.

“Debating is encouraged in schools because these skills are required in everyday interaction with others,” she added as she ended her speech.

The competition, which was the 18th instalment, saw a new change in its format where debaters were required to follow the Asian Parliamentary Style.

The debaters faced new challenges, which included having less time to prepare their speeches, present scenarios to support their case and also less time to provide an immediate response.

The award for Best Speaker during the finals went to PTES’ Md Nasri Hj Md Tahir, while Best Overall Speaker went to Maktab Sains’ Lim Chai Tze.

British High Commissioner, David Ian Campbell, presented prizes and trophies to the finalists.

This year’s competition was organised by the Co-Curricular Education Department at the Ministry of Education and hosted by Maktab Sains.
