MCYS Minister at launch of Singapore Language Month

THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports attended the launching ceremony of Singapore’s Language Month 2014 to show the Sultanate’s support to promote Malay Language yesterday.

The minister, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah was present at the Bulan Bahasa 2014 ceremony at Singapore’s Temadun Asia museum.

He was invited by Malay Language Council Singapore Chairman Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad who was also the Senior Minister of State, Minister of Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) in a statement said Bulan Bahasa or the Language Month was an annually held activity run by Singapore’s Malay Language Council.

“Language Month aimed to promote the usage and development of Malay Language in Singapore,” the statement read. It also desired to preserve and cultivate the grandeur of the Malay language and culture.”

It was launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Singapore, Tharman Shanmugaratnam yesterday.

Also present was Singapore Parliament member Zaqy Mohamad, senior government officers from Singapore and special invitations from Malaysia and Brunei.

MCYS stated that both the Sultanate and Singapore had a strong network of cooperation especially in the culture and arts field.

It was said that both the ASEAN neighbours have always promoted Malay Language and Literature through regional cooperation such as Majlis Bahasa Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia (MABBIM).– Abdul Azim Kassim
