Fire and Rescue Dep’t holds skills contest to mark 54th anniversary

THE Fire and Rescue Department recently organised Fire Fighters’ Skills Competition in conjunction with the 54th anniversary of the department this year.

Present to officiate at the competition last Tuesday was the Acting Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue Department, Shabandi Hj Abd Halim.

The competition was intended to showcase the skills and efficiency of firefighters during operations. This also includes ensuring the correct procedures of using firefighting equipment to extinguish fire during emergencies. The competition was also hoped to instil strong cooperation and communication skills amongst fire and rescue officers and to always strive for the best and to learn and share their experiences.

Seven operation branches of Fire and Rescue Departments throughout the country participated in the competition, competing in four different categories namely target shooting, rescue operation, high ground rescue operation and handling of fire-extinguishing appliances.

Meanwhile, a separate prize presentation ceremony was held last Thursday. Present as the guest of honour and on-hand to present trophies and prizes was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dato Paduka Hj Abd Majid Mangarshah.

Also in attendance were Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Roslan Hj Tajaah; senior officers, members and staff under the Fire and Rescue Department.

Operation Branch ‘B’ from Belait district was the overall champion, while Operation Branch ‘C’ from Brunei-Muara district and Operation Branch ‘G’ from Temburong district placed first and second runners-up in overall performance.

The overall winner of the competition will represent the department in the International Elite Rescuers Exchange Workshop, Singapore Global Fire Fighters and Paramedics Challenge 2014 as well as Singapore Civil Defence Parade 2014 which will be held from September 9 to 13 in Singapore.
