3,000 join run to celebrate HM’s birthday

NEARLY 3,000 people participated in a run to celebrate His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th birthday in the early hours yesterday morning.

The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs both joined the annual run that involved 2,964 youths and veterans from all four districts.

More than 3,500 individuals participated in last year’s birthday run.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah blew the horn to launch the run’s eight categories from the 21km Open Half Marathon to the 3km Fun Run; in which he and Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof participated in.

Most of the participants joined the Fun Run with 1,936 people, while 488 males and 193 females competed in the 21km Open Half Marathon.

The run was also participated by 36 special needs individuals, including those who are visually-impaired and physically challenged.

The minister presented prizes to the top 10 winners of all the categories, as well as lucky draw prizes.

According to a statement from MCYS, His Majesty’s birthday run was aimed to encourage the community to lead a healthy lifestyle through sports and recreation activities.

The run also hopes to foster unity, understanding and cooperation among the community to develop sports in the Sultanate.

The run was open to all citizens, permanent residents and expats in Brunei.
