THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade yesterday confirmed that a 28-year-old Bruneian student passed away in Brisbane, Australia, last Sunday.

The student was identified as Mohammad Syahmi Hj Abdullah, who was in his final year of the Bachelor Degree in Business and Management programme at Queensland University of Technology.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade official, who did not want to be named, said family members of the deceased had been informed.

She added that the cause of death was still under investigation.

A WhatsApp message on the student’s death was being circulated on social media.

The unverified message stated that the student passed away when he was playing football. It added that his body would be repatriated today.

When contacted, a Ministry of Education official said Mohd Syahmi was a private student.

Meanwhile, the Brunei High Commission in Canberra declined to comment “due to the sensitivity of the issue”.
