ORPHANS from Kg Lumut I would soon be able to participate in specialised training to upgrade their information and communication technology (ICT) skills.

Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Hj Mohd Shafiee Ahmad said Kg Lumut I Village Consultative Council will introduce the ICT programme for orphans.

“We have computers and we will help these orphans through computer classes held once or twice weekly at our Balai Raya (community hall)," said LegCo member, who is also the Kg Lumut I village head.

YB Hj Mohd Shafiee explained that the programme would utilise 10 computers contributed earlier by Total E&P Deep Offshore Borneo B V. The next step would see the village consultative council approaching parents and guardians of the orphans to discuss the initiative.

He added that the orphans and their families – identified with the assistance of the Belait Community Development Department (JAPEM) as a reliable source – would begin with a briefing to explain the programme’s objectives and obtain their permission for participation.

"We decided to launch this initiative because everyone understands that this is the age of technology, the age of the computer. The intention is to assist orphans who have fewer resources," said the village head.

YB Hj Mohd Shafiee was attending a Hari Raya celebration with the 58 orphans of Lumut I and their families at his residence in Sg Bakong on Saturday night.

Each orphan was presented with a token Hari Raya contribution and took their chance at a lucky draw. Guests were treated to refreshments while being entertained by festive music.

The event also saw guest of honour and Kg Lumut I Village Consultative Council adviser Hj Bujang Hj Masu'ut present appointment certificates to the new heads of village consultative council bureaus, marking the start of their five-year terms.
