Warrant of arrest out for customs offender

THE Magistrates’ Court yesterday issued a warrant of arrest against a man after he did not turn up for proceedings.

Wasman Hj Masbah claimed trial to multiple customs offences of smuggling more than 100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, 42 litres of gasoline and two packets of chicken wings.

The alleged smuggling and possession of dutiable and unexcisable goods took place between March 2011, 2012 and December 22, 2012. He was released on a $50,000 court bail and two local sureties.

The alleged smuggling of gasoline took place on September 29, 2012 around the vicinity of Terusan Sungai Kupang in a 13-feet boat, which was found to be carrying two jerrycans containing gasoline.

The 42-year-old was also allegedly found with 68 cartons of cigarettes on October 26, 2012, and in the early hours on December 22, 2012, he was found with 67 cartons of cigarettes.

The tax that was due to be paid for the 135 cartons of cigarettes was $6,620 in total, according to the Royal Customs and Excise Department.

The trial is currently at the prima facie stage to determine whether there is a case to answer or not. Deputy public prosecutor Hjh Rozaimah Hj Abd Rahman has called a total of 18 prosecution witnesses to testify against Wasman.

A further mention of the case is scheduled to be heard on August 23 before magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner.
