FUELLED with the motivation to strive for honours in the upcoming Excellent Village Awards, Kampung Belimbing has set its sights on re-entering the contest with its status as a “hiking village.”

Speaking to The Brunei Times, Head of Kg Belimbing YB Hj Gapor @ Hj Daud Karim said its one village, one product of Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park has started construction of its surau (prayer hall) after a two-year wait.

“With the surau finally built, visitors will be able to perform their obligatory prayers and other activities at the recreational park,” he said.

The praying facility at the park, he said, has emboldened village leaders to aim for success at the AKC, as Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park will fulfil the religious criteria required for the one village, one product in the contest.

Construction of the surau at the park started since late June this year, and was expected to finish in September. Other facilities such as the toilet have been available in the park even before the construction of the surau began, he added. He further said air-conditioners also made its way in the waiting list to be moved into the surau once it has been completed. Besides the surau, the Gerai Muafakat Sarubing was also well-received by the public, where Hj Gapor said it was a rare sight to see empty stalls since its was launched in 2012.

“The stalls provided Kg Belimbing residents, especially youths, not just employment, but also the opportunity for them to be involved and pursue the entrepreneurship,” said Hj Gapor.

Currently, the stalls provided were for villagers to showcase their fruit products, beside two restaurants where visitors can eat and drink after carrying out their activities in the park.

“Perhaps in the future, we will be providing another stall specifically vegetable products grown by the villagers. “With the expansion being made, InsyaAllah there will be more activities available to be carried out here in the park,” he added.
