AN EARLY morning blaze ravaged the top floor of a double-storey house in Kg Sg Pandan but its two occupants are safe and sound, suffering only minor injuries when escaping their burning house.

A 60-year-old father and his young son were asleep when the fire happened but heat and smoke caused the child to wake up around 2.30am.

Entering the living room to investigate, the son was shocked to face flames and thick smoke. Waking his father, they both rushed out of the house without taking anything with them in the panic that ensued.

They later found out that their valuables and documents were all lost in the fire. Meanwhile, two youths passing by the village at the time had noticed smoke from a distance. Arriving at the junction, one of the youths recognised the house as belonging to his friend.

“When I realised it was my friend’s house, I quickly went inside to look for him … But when we saw that he and his son had safely escaped downstairs, we made the emergency call to 991 and 995,” said the passer-by.

The Fire and Rescue Department recorded the call at 2.41am, sending 10 firefighters and three fire engines from the Kuala Belait Fire Station to the scene.

They were supported by Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP).

In the aftermath, two rooms on the top floor were destroyed, while a vehicle parked in the garage had slight smoke damage.

The man suffered slight bruises to his head and hands and is in the hospital for observation, while his son received small cuts on his leg.

The cause of fire is still under investigation.
