THE village consultative council of Kg Pudak is determined to benefit from the popularity of its homestay programme to further promote its village as a tourist destination.

Acting village head of Kg Pudak Shahri Hj Durahim said the council expects to get the tourism project up and running by next year.

Counting on the average of 2,000 domestic and foreign visitors every year, Kg Pudak in Mukim Kota Batu is planning to include the homestay in its tourism package in the hopes of boosting the village’s economic activities.

Homestay is one way for tourists to experience firsthand the culture and way of life of the village residents.

It will add on to the list of products featured by the village in its economic activities. Currently, it is focusing on fish cage farming in cooperation with Kg Pudak Cooperative Berhad.

Shahri said tourism activities have slowed down as it is the Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebration this month. However, he expects the activities to pick up again at the end of August and early September.

The council also takes advantage of the school holidays since the village is a popular tourist destination for school delegations and the private sectors.

The village is involved in many event and activities such as bedudun (visiting) aimed at understanding the life of those in the water village.

From January to May this year, the village received around 500 visitors. Most of them were from Japan and Malaysia.

The homestay will complement the various activities in Kg Pudak which include hiking and trekking the jungle, kayaking, participating in the traditional dances and tasting local cuisine.

Kg Pudak recorded around 2,000 visitors in the year 2012 and 2013. The village head said he hoped that the number will increase in the coming years.

Besides Kg Pudak, Mukim Kota Batu has several successful villages (such as Kg Sg Matan) that highlighted their tourism’s uniqueness to boost its economic activities. Located at Pulau Berambang of Brunei river, Kg Pudak is neighbour to Kg Menunggol and Kg Sg Bunga Tanjong Kindana. It is situated near Kg Serdang and Kg Sg Matan.
