RESIDENTS of Kg Putat collected $7,800 for the purpose of holding its annual religious ceremony which includes donating to orphans.

The Kg Putat Village Consultative Council (MPK) yesterday held its 22nd tahlil and doa arwah ceremony at the Kg Putat Mosque.

The annual tradition, which has been practiced by village residents for over two decades, also saw the distribution of collected fund to 11 orphans.

Mohd Zakaria Hj Mohd Salleh, the event chairperson, in his opening speech said that the $7,800 was contributed by 89 Kg Putat residents. The fund was collected between April 1 and May 31, 2014.

“We initially received over $6,660 over the duration stated. However, we had some leftover money from last year which was $679.50, This brought the total collected to $7,339.50,” he told The Brunei Times.

“But the reception this year was very positive and another late donation, which was received just before the event today totalled the sum to $7,850.”

The ceremony began with a religious lecture delivered by Islamic Da’wah Centre lecturer Ustaz Hj Mail Besar.

Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Kg Putat’s village head Yang Berhormat Hj Jumat Akim presented donations to the orphans.

YB Hj Jumat also presented certificates to 11 students who completed their Al-Quran and Muqaddam classes for year 2013 and presented a token of appreciation to Ustaz Hj Mail.

Certificates were also presented to those who participated in the recital of the Quran 66 times.

Mohd Zakaria in his speech said that he hoped yesterday’s event can foster good relations among residents of Kg Putat, especially between younger and senior generations.

Alhamdulillah we’re here again and we get the chance to have our annual ceremony as we have done in the previous years,” he said.

“We must not forget the reasons for holding this event, which is to remember and send out our prayers to our families, relatives, close friends who have already returned Allah SWT.”

The tahlil and doa arwah was led by the secretary of the ceremony organising committee, Jaharnor Hj Rungging.
