SMILES and laughter were etched on the faces of families who came together to spend quality time during activities to mark National Family Day yesterday.
Themed “Keluarga Berwawasan” (Family with a Vision), the celebrations were held simultaneously across nine zones in Brunei Darussalam, four in Brunei-Muara, two in Belait, two in Tutong and one in Temburong.
To bless the celebrations, mass Subuh prayers were held at selected mosques at the nine zones, followed by dawn lectures.
Celebrations in Brunei-Muara were held at the Agro-Technology Park, Belapan Sports Complex, Silver Jubilee Recreational Park and Jerudong Park Amphitheatre.
Attending the National Family Day Celebrations at the Agro-Technology Park in Kg Tungku was Minister of Home Affairs YB Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj Othman.
Families visiting the park had the opportunity to ride horses and try out flying fox. Live-chicken catching and tug-of-war provided competitive members of the public a chance to win prizes.
Meanwhile, at the Belapan Sports Complex, parents rolled back the years and relive their youth by participating in games such as the three-legged race.
Attending the celebrations as the guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Hj Yusoff Hj Ismail.
At the Silver Jubilee Recreational Park, visitors showed off their merambat (netting) skills by trying to net cans set up on the floor.
Minister of Religious Affairs YB Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman attended the celebrations, where hadrah and tausyeh were performed by Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic Secondary School for Boys students.
Minister of Education YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awg Abu Bakar Hj Apong sounded the horn to start the National Family Day walkathon at the Jerudong Park Amphitheatre.
Visitors to the celebrations at Jerudong took part in the family amazing race and dastar (traditional headwear) and sinjang (traditional waist wrap) folding competitions.
Competitions for flower arranging and healthy cooking were also among the activities organised to celebrate National Family Day.
In Belait, residents came out in full force to show their support for the district’s National Family Day celebrations.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports YB Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah was present at the celebrations in Sg Mau Recreational Park as guest of honour.
Families visiting the recreational park were entertained by the traditional performances of silat, taichi and musical shows.
Villagers and performers from the various mukim of Belait put on a display of family togetherness at Belait’s Silver Jubilee Recreational Park which was attended by Pg Dato Paduka Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs.
Pasarneka and Tamu at Kg Serambangun and Muafakat Market at Kg Long Mayan were the focal points for National Family Day celebrations in Tutong.
Present at the celebrations at Kg Serambangun was Minister of Communications YB Pehin Orang Kaya Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
Visitors at Pasarneka and Tamu browsed through products sold from the various mukim and villages which included food and drinks, clothes and bags. Children also participated in colouring contests.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Mohd Yussof struck the gong to mark the start of the celebrations at Kg Long Mayan, Tutong.
Children under 10 years participated in the tug-of-war competition. Visitors also enjoyed the Explorace Game where teams had a time limit to complete challenges, such as putting makeup on their teammates while they were blindfolded.
Temburong also saw a high turnout where several families participated in various competitions, such as fishing, cooking and kite-making.
Launching the celebrations in Temburong was YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources.
National Family Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of May.
The first National Family Day celebration took place in 2012 following His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s call to strengthen the family institution during the Eighth Legislative Council session.
