10 reciters proceed to final round of Nat’l Al-Quran reading contest

QARI Hj Mahrof Hj Chuchu emerged as the first prize winner at the semi-final of the National Level Quran Reading Competition for Adults for 1435 Hijrah/2014 that was held at the Islamic Da’wah Centre, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Hjh Nurfaezah Hj Emran beat 11 other female contestants to secure first place for the qariah category.

Ten readers comprising five qaris (male readers) and five qariahs (female readers) competed in the semi-final.

Present as the guest of honour was Minister of Development Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman. Also present was Religious Affairs Deputy Minister Dato Paduka Pg Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar.

Co-chairman for the competition, Hj Idris Hj Ali, in his welcoming speech said the objective of the competition is to select the best Al-Quran reciters to compete in the finals.

“There will be 12 competitors for the final rounds. The 10 winners from the semi-finals will be joined by another two awaiting contestants — the winners for both qari and qariah category in last year’s competition,” he said, adding that the national level finals will be held for two days from April 8.

Hj Idris said 50 contestants participated in this year’s competition out of which 40 managed to proceed to the quarterfinals last month. However, two contestants had to withdraw from the semi-final for unavoidable reasons.

For the qari category, the second and third places went to siblings Hj Muhd Fahmi Hj Awang Metussin and Md Fikri Hj Awang Metussin respectively.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ali and Md Zul Hafiz Tengah came in fourth and fifth respectively.

Meanwhile for the qariah category, Hjh Nurul Akmalina Hj Yahya secured the second spot while Hjh Siti Noor Dzuhairah Hj Awang Damit came in third.

Dk Fauziah Nadhirah Pg Hj Jofri and Siti Huzaimah Yadey Hj Rosli came in thrid and fourth places respectivly.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi handed over the prizes and certificates of participation to all contestants.

The competition is an annual project of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
