HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday paid his last respects to Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Orang Kaya Penggawa Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Mohd Abbas Al-Sufri bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim yesterday.

Pehin Dato Hj Abbas Al-Sufri passed away on Saturday at the age of 88.

The prayers for the late Pehin Dato Hj Abbas Al-Sufri were held at his residence at Mile 1, Jalan Tutong, prior to his burial.

The late Pehin Dato Hj Abbas Al Sufri was one of the two officers who accompanied the Grand Chamberlain to present the “Proclamation of Independence” to His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam on January 1, 1984.

The late Pehin Dato Hj Abbas Al Sufri was also one of the 21 students of the First Labuan Scout Troop of the Government English School whose efforts helped develop the Brunei Scout Association. He was the elder brother of Legislative Council Speaker, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Hj Awang Isa.

His Majesty joined in performing mass prayers for the deceased, led by State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Hj Abdul Aziz Juned.

The body of Pehin Dato Hj Abbas Al Sufri was laid to rest at the Kianggeh Muslim Cemetery.
