Bushfire breaks out in Seria
A BUSHFIRE broke out yesterday afternoon in empty fields adjacent to the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Vocational School in Seria.
Onlookers from nearby houses sat outside their homes as they watched firemen douse the fire that had already encroached onto the roadside.
Although thick smoke billowing out could be seen from the highway, the fire did not threaten to spread, thanks to the quick action of the firemen.
According to an Indonesian worker who wanted only to be identified as Nissa, the fire had been burning slowly from about mid-day but went out of control due to strong winds and dry weather.
“After a while, the fire got bigger and the smoke got blacker, spreading to some crops near the school and housing area by 3.15pm,” she said.
Another witness living nearby believed the fire could have started from a garden nearby, where farmers usually light small open fires to burn grass trimmings.
“The farmers always burn their garden refuse, but this has never happened before,” he said.
The Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said they received the call at 3.27pm.
Three fire engines carrying 10 personnel from Seria Fire Station were deployed to the scene. However, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
