BRUNEIANS can now apply for postgraduate scholarships to South Korea, with three slots up for grabs this year.

Under the 2014 Korean Government Scholarship Programme for International Students Enrolled in Graduate Programmes, successful candidates are expected to arrive in South Korea for university registration from August 25-27 this year.

The scholarships are available to those applying for a two-year Masters degree programme and three-year doctoral programme. Succesful candidates will also take, a year or less of Korean language course.

Applicants must be a Bruneian under the age of 40 as of September 1 this year, a statement from the South Korean Embassy in Brunei stated.

For a Masters degree programme, applicants are required to have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, while for a doctoral degree programme, a Master’s degree is compulsory.

Applicants too should have Grade Point Average (GPA) above B level, which is 80 per cent, from the last education institution attended.

The embassy stated that the scholarship benefits include the exemption of entrance and tuition fees, return air ticket to and from South Korea, monthly allowances and medical insurance and settlement allowances.

The scholarships aimed to provide higher education in South Korea for international students, and promote international exchange in education.

It was also hoped the scholarships would promote friendship among the participating countries.

The press release stated that a total of nine students are currently studying in South Korea under the scholarship programme, while five Bruneians have completed their Masters or first degree courses.

Nine of the remaining students are pursuing courses in Measuring and Control Technology, Chemistry/Biology and International Relations, Fine Arts, Energy Resources, Politics and Diplomacy, and Economy.
