Students on study visit to Japan

FOUR recipients of the 2013 SEAMEO-Japan ESD Award departed for a study visit to Japan yesterday.

Siti Humaira Fitriyah Hasharinuddin, Nur Nabilah Amani Simat, Nur Izzah Haziqah Abd Rahim and Nurafiqah Syakirah Duraman from Sayyidina Hasan Secondary School in Kilanas won first place in the competition that was open to schools across Southeast Asia.

The award was presented to the students for their project showcasing their school’s “Environmental Awareness – 3R to 6R” programme.

The students will be spending four days in Japan during which they will attend a poster exhibition on their project and give a short presentation on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

They will also participate in a Bruneian cultural performance and visit local schools and cultural sites.

They will also have the opportunity to participate in the “A World of New Experiences for Kids and All” event.

The award aims to raise awareness of ESD and promote ESD best practices in schools and communities across Southeast Asia.

Last year’s award was organised by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, in cooperation with UNESCO Asia, the Pacific Regional Bureau for Education and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. The students were accompanied by their school principal Norazizah Hj Mohd Salleh and supervising teacher Sia Ai Kim.
