KUPU SB volunteers help out Kg Penapar victims
MORE than 130 students of the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB) volunteered their time and energy yesterday to help out flood victims in Mukim Tanjong Maya, Tutong.
Comprising primarily first-year undergraduates of Usuluddin and Syariah courses, the volunteers helped residents of 12 houses in Kg Penapar air out their flood-soaked furniture and remove any remaining water from their homes.
The community service project, themed “Membantu Sambil Belajar” (Assisting while providing charity), was organised by KUPU SB’s student council.
Student council President Omardi Hj Abu Bakar led the volunteers, and were accompanied by Lecturers Ustaz Ali Hardi Hj Mohammad and Ustaz Amirol Abd Rahim.
The volunteers gathered as early as 7.30am at the Penapar mosque before being briefed and divided into groups to different houses affected by the recent flooding in Mukim Tanjong Maya.
They cleaned and drew out floodwater from the houses and their perimeters. The students also helped to carry furniture outside to dry under the sun.
The cleaning campaign was adjourned around noon to give way for the male volunteers to go for Friday prayers and continued around 2pm.
Among the objectives of the project was to lend a helping hand to the flood victims around Mukim Tanjong Maya, which has even affected the homes of some KUPU SB students and lecturers.
It also served to nurture volunteerism among the KUPU SB undergraduates, as part of a caring society.
Apart from helping out manually, the student council also handed out donations in the form of rice and food hampers to the heads of families at the end of the campaign.
