Students learn to appreciate national flag

A TOTAL of 66 primary school students attending a briefing that aimed to foster patriotism and loyalty to the country from a young age.

The Year Four to Six students from Orang Kaya Ali Wanika Setia Diraja (OKAWSD) Kupang Primary School, Tutong, were taught to appreciate the country’s flag and national anthem yesterday.

The Information Department at the Prime Minister’s Office organised the briefing for public and private schools in the country, starting with the Tutong district.

Head of Tutong district’s Information branch Hjh Noorhijrah Hj Idris said the talk aimed to improve students’ understanding and promote patriotism towards the country’s flag and national anthem, Allah Peliharakan Sultan (Allah Save The King).

During the talk, she explained in detail the definitions and procedures in raising the flag of Brunei, and also the history behind the national anthem.

Other activities were also carried out as part of the programme, such as quizzes and an essay writing competition, which served to gauge the students’ existing knowledge on the briefing.

The best 10 essay writers were presented with a gift courtesy of the Information Department.

The programme is one of the department’s efforts to promote patriotism and respect towards the national flag and anthem, and will be extended to all primary schools across the country.

Also present at the event were First Senior Education Officer Ismail Hj Hassan and Second Senior Education Officer Maimunah Hj Hasan.
