MORE than 80 representatives from a Malaysian association participated in a Khatam Al-Quran ceremony at the Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in Kiarong, yesterday.

The event was jointly organised by the mosque’s committee and Halaqah Al-Quran Association of Selangor.

The Department of Mosque Affairs in a press statement said that the ceremony was organised to uphold and apply syiar Islam (Islamic teachings) in daily life through the appreciation of Al-Quran.

It was also held to further develop Islamic knowledge and foster relations among the participants from both countries.

Present at the ceremony as the guest of honour was Mosque Affairs Acting Director Ustaz Hj Abd Rajid Hj Mohd Salleh. He was accompanied by Assistant Director Hj Amir Hisham Hj Masri.

The Khatam Al-Quran — from Surah Ad-Duhaa to Surah Al-Lahab — began with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Ustaz Hj Abd Rajid. It was concluded with a Takhtim reading and Dikir Marhaban performance.

Participants were later given tokens of appreciation including bunga telur (hard-boiled egg adorned with flower decorations) which were handed over by the guest of honour.

In an interview, Siti Ramlah Abdullah, a member of the association, said that they had previously held Khatam Al-Quran in other countries in the region.

“In the beginning, we (the association) conducted Khatam Al-Quran events just with the neighbouring states of Selangor but now we have gone international including journeys to Singapore and Thailand,” Siti Ramlah said.

“After (Brunei) we will return to Malaysia. Our next potential destination is over at Aceh, Sumatra in Indonesia.”

The delegation will hold another Khatam Al-Quran ceremony at the Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Mateen Mosque in Kg Mulaut today.

They are scheduled to depart the country in the afternoon.
