Fishing fest draws crowd to Tasek Sarubing

National 1 minute, 32 seconds

THE annual fishing festival at Tasek Sarubing Recreational Park kicked off yesterday with one contestant hauling in a monster in just over half an hour.

In the fastest catch category, Sukardi Hj Mabot reeled in a 5.4kg snakehead (locally known as toman, in just 31 minutes, 45 seconds. The 35-year-old’s secret? – chicken liver.

“Because the _toman _is a vicious fish, I thought it was best that I used a meaty bait to catch one. But I didn’t expect to catch one this big; this is going to be a good hearty meal for the family,” Sukardi said.

Coming in second, Md Baharuddin Hj Samion, 26, landed a fish a few minutes later weighing 2.44kg.

“Fishing is a hobby, and competitions like these bring out a lot of solidarity among the people here with all the competitiveness of the competition,” Md Baharuddin said.

The other category, for heaviest fish, was won by Md Sahrul Azman Khairul Salleh, who landed a giant snakehead weighing 3.7kg. (Sukardy’s fish didn’t count because he was not in this category.)

Coming in a close second was Muhammad Khairul Fikri Ali, who caught a 3.69kg snakehead.

“Fishing is my hobby. I occasionally fish with my friends and family – basically anyone who’s interested, so we fish at least two to three times per week. Anyone who wants to try it, should,” Fikri said.

But anglers should remember that fishing in the lake is only permitted during the annual fishing festival, said Yusri, a member of the Tasek Sarubing Recreational Park committee.

However, Yusri pointed out that the public are welcome to visit the park and feed the fish.

Along with the fishing contest, which was organised by Belimbing, Subok village and mukim consultative council, local fruits and foods, as well as handicrafts were on sale.

The festival ends tomorrow.
