THE fruit fair that was meant to open last Sunday in the car park opposite the Royal Regalia in the capital has officially been cancelled.

Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) Municipal Department yesterday confirmed the festival had been scrapped. Earlier, Marshidi Hj Omar, a member of the organising committee, said the event had been cancelled because of a lack of seller interest. He claimed just three vendors had signed up for the event and that a minimum of 10 were required.

Hj Mohd Sofian Hj Amin, spokesperson for BSB Municipal Department, said the main focus of the fruit festival was to encourage vendors to sell their produce in a more organised and legal manner instead setting up shop on the roadside. It was also hoped the fair would boost the development of the fruit industry in the country.

Hj Mohd Sofian said the fair had also been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances beyond their control.
