Brunei braces for monsoon season

BRUNEI will be experiencing “unsettled weather” conditions with occasional afternoon or evening heavy showers and thundershowers for the next two months.

A press release issued by the Metrological Department, Ministry of Communications (MinComm) yesterday said Brunei will be transiting to the Northeast Monsoon from December to March.

Prolonged rain with late night or early morning thunderstorms will be present, leading to expected flash floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas whenever the occurrence of continuous moderate to heavy rainfall is prolonged for more than two hours, with greater risks of severe flash flooding during continuous heavy downpours coinciding with high tides.

“In view of these situations, the general public are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure safety and prevent any undesirable incidents from happening,” said the press release.

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the weather conditions closely and will issue appropriate weather advisory warnings, as and when necessary, according to the Department’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
