KOSEKA hits record 360 tonnes of Laila for 2013

FARMING cooperative Koseka (Koperasi Setia Kawan Berhad) has produced over 360 metric tonnes of Laila rice for the off-season of 2013, the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood (DAA) reported yesterday.

In a press release, the department said the cooperative members’ continuous participation in the Rice Farmer Field School (RFFS) has boost production at 368.76 metric tonnes at its farm in the Wasan padi fields this year.

Established in 2007, Koseka has 79 members and has 178.7 hectares of land. The cooperative is led by its chairman Lieutenant Colonel (R) Hj Mohd Sahlan Hidup.

The cooperative plants a variety of padi plantation commercially twice a year.

The DAA in the statement said members of the cooperative, including the chairman, have been actively learning from the RFFS on effective crop management, which helped each farmer boost production. At the chairman’s farm located at the Lot 22A at the Kg Wasan Agricultural Area, the cooperative and DAA organised a harvesting event to initiate the start the harvest of its Laila rice which will last until January 2014.

The harvest was led by Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar. Also present at the harvesting event were senior government officials at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and senior DAA officials. The department added that it is currently assisting the farmers with the provision of machineries used for harvest. It added that the cooperative will provide its own machineries for its farmers in the future.

The department also said that it has also published a manual book titled Rice Review System, which is used as a reference for padi entrepreneurs to achieve their harvest targets in a systematic manner.
