His Majesty presents certificates to over 200 KUPU SB graduates

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB) chancellor, presented Masters, Bachelor Degrees, Higher National Diploma and Diploma to 275 graduates at KUPU SB’s third convocation.
KUPU SB had since produced over 629 graduates throughout its 2011-2013 academic year. The convocation was held at the plenary hall of the International Convention Centre.
Out of the graduates, 14 received their Masters in Religious Teaching and 43 students received postgraduate diplomas in religious teaching.
Another 64 received degrees in Religious Teaching, 125 Higher National Diploma in Religious Teaching and 29 received Diploma in Religious Teaching Usuluddin and Syariah.
KUPU SB ra’es, Dr Hjh Masnon Hj Ibrahim said in achieving the country’s 2035 vision, KUPU SB, as the only religious teaching institution in the country in Islamic education, emphasise in creating educated and skilled teachers especially in religious education.
In relation to this, the ra’es said, KUPU SB had began offering PhD in religious teaching programme.
Four PhD students have begin their studies for the 2013-2014 academic session, she said.
“Even though the number is small, as a beginning, the number is meaningful,” she said adding that the PhD students are all local students in line with the country’s vision.
KUPU SB’s plans also include recruiting its own graduates.
Dr Hjh Masnon said KUPU SB wanted the graduates to pursue their studies to the highest level and be part of KUPU SB teaching staff in the future.
The plan was part of KUPU SB’s support to the implementation of the Compulsory Religious Education Order 2012.
Dr Hjh Masnon also updated His Majesty on the progress of KUPU SB’s Centre for Research for Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah understanding.
Dr Hjh Masnon said that the centre continue to distinguish itself in both the national and international level.
“With its role as the institution for reference on issues related to the understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah, the centre play active roles in disseminating the correct understanding of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jama’ah,” she said.
Dr Hjh Masnon also touched on regional and international cooperation and relationships.
This year, Dr Hjh Masnon said KUPU SB became a member of Consortium of Asia Pacific Education University (CAPEU) and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 18 universities.
“The main focus of these cooperation is to increase the capacity and roles of the universities in the field of teaching and education,” she said.
KUPU SB, Dr Hjh Masnon said, was also a member of Asia Pacific University Community Engagement Network (APUCEN) with 53 member universities from 13 countries.
The Asia Pacific University Community Engagement Network focused cooperation related to community service.
The ra’es said that the convocation does not mark the end of the duty and responsibilities of the graduates, it means that their new responsibilities have begun.
The desire to make Brunei as a Zikir Nation, the raes said was instilled in every KUPU SB graduates , that must be continued and empowered.
She expressed hope that the graduates will apply their knowledge in their service as religious teachers.
Graduates now play the role of an educator, carrying together with them the responsibilities of disseminating and strengthening the appreciation of religion in the people, she said.
The ceremony was attended by Pengiran-Pengiran Cheterias, Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Legislative Council Members, foreign dignitaries, permanent secretaries and invited guests.
Later in the evening, KUPU SB held a graduation dinner in conjunction with the convocation at the ICC in Berakas. Present as the event’s guest of honour was Minister of Religious Affairs Yang Berhormat Pg Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Mohammad Pg Hj Abd Rahman.
