LOCAL jobseekers should avoid being too selective when looking for employment, said the head of the Local Work Agency and Workforce Development (APTK) from the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.

In his speech at the opening ceremony of the third series of the Brunei Mini Job Fair 2013 held at the Airport Mall in Berakas, Hj Afero Eswandy Hj Mohamad in his capacity as chairman of the event and head of APTK, said the current employment climate sees “no room for being selective” when applying for jobs, but emphasised the importance of identifying the right type of job that best fits and utilises knowledge and skill sets to their full potential.

Hj Afero Eswandy also applauded the agencies and companies who took the time to make this event a success and hoped that it would serve as an example to other agencies and the corporate sector for organising similar events in the future.

The job fair, organised in collaboration with the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), aims to reduce unemployment and expedite job employment procedures as well as encourage more locals to work in the private sector.

Attending as the guest of honour was Hj Roslan Taja’ah, deputy permanent secretary from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

About 32 companies from the automotive, construction and logistics sector participated in the fair, with almost 580 vacancies being available for both graduates and non graduates.

The first mini job fair held in May this year saw around 1,500 jobs in the retail, hospitality and tourism sectors being offered.

Meanwhile, the second mini job fair in September offered more than 200 jobs in the finance, insurance and ICT industries.

The fair which ends on November 28, will also include events such as career workshops and open interviews.

In addition, there will be career briefings by experienced local workers from respective companies, to share their experiences.

The APTK yesterday urges all jobseekers to bring along relevant documents, and be dressed appropriately, as there will be walk-in interview sessions taking place at the fair. Job seekers are advised to register at the APTK booth to obtain their card before attending the open interviews.
