HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam said yesterday he was pleased to see more employment opportunities being provided for locals in the oil and gas sector in recent years.

The ruler said it was “very good” that efforts undertaken by the government, through the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office, have helped to secure more jobs for locals in the industry.

“I think more students who are graduates (should) go into the oil and gas industry,’’ His Majesty said.

Since 2011, the Energy Department has been setting yearly recruitment targets for the country’s main economic driver.

After surpassing the set targets each year, which resulted in the majority of jobs being filled by Bruneians, a higher target of 3,000 new recruits was set for 2014.

On Monday, Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Mohd Yasmin Hj Umar said 60 to 70 per cent of the workforce in many companies in the industry now comprises locals.
