Students, teachers celebrate World Children’s Day

WORLD Children’s Day 2013 in Brunei was yesterday celebrated at an event held at the Dewan Serbaguna area, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, Berakas.

Approximately 1,000 students and teachers of government and private schools from the Brunei-Muara and Tutong districts, participated in a mass Zumba exercise session, which was the highlight.

Present to launch the event was Deputy Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman, who also took part in the Zumba session.

A number of booths were also present as side-activities for the event participants, courtesy of event organiser Community Development Department (JAPEM), McDonalds, the Language and Literature Bureau, Ministry of Health, the Darussalam Motorcycle Association (PEMODA) and Harley Owners Group Brunei (HOGB) among other organisations.

As part of the event, prizes were awarded to St Andrew’s School, Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI), Sekolah Menengah Berakas, Pusat Tingkatan Enam Meragang and Sekolah Menengah Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam (SMJA), for being the top five schools that raised the most amount of donations for the National Orphans Fund.

Themed “Stop Violence Against Children”, this year’s event focused on promoting awareness about children’s rights and welfare, and preventing exploitation of, and violence against children.
