Man caught with 20,000 cigarettes fined $40,000

A MAN who was in possession of over 20,000 sticks of untaxed cigarettes has been imposed a $40,000 fine by the Magistrates’ Court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The court document states that on October 23, Royal Brunei Police Force, Crime Investigation Department officers of Tutong conducted a search at home of Mohammad Saidi Abdullah Sia, 52, at Kg Petani Tutong.

During the operation, a police CID officer made an inspection on two cars and found the contraband, namely over 100 cartons of cigarettes of various brands.

An investigation was later conducted at the office of Royal Customs and Excise Department in Kg Anggerek Desa, during which Md Saidi admitted that he had purchased all of the seized goods from a person in Limbang.

During the proceedings yesterday before Senior Magistrate Hj Nabil Daraina PDH Badaruddin, Md Saidi told the court that he intended to sell the cigarettes however he was unable to do so following the raid.

The court further ordered the defendant to pay the fine in installments within a seven month period at $5,000 per month.
