BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN
BRUNEI delegates to a regional ICT awards competition departed for Hong Kong yesterday.
The annual Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2013 is being held in Hong Kong, beginning today until November 27.
The APICTA Awards is “an international awards programme which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in closing the digital divide,” according to a press statement from the Authority for Info-Communications Technology Industry (AITI).
“By providing networking and product benchmarking opportunities to ICT innovators and entrepreneurs in the region, the programme is designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities through exposure to venture capitalists and investors,” they said.
Ten Bruneian teams will be competing across several categories against international teams across the APICTA member countries. The Bruneian teams consist mostly of winners and runners-up from this year’s Brunei ICT Awards that took place in September.
In September, local startup Giftbox Enterprise Sdn Bhd won the BICTA award in the ICT Industry category for its project Malppy & Friends, a portal that provides instant reward system for shoppers through collective purchasing power.
Meanwhile in the Tertiary Student Category, a group of students from Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) bagged first place and $7,000 for its iPad application designed to aid autistic individuals in learning to communicate.
A student duo from Chung Hua Middle School in Bandar Seri Begawan topped the Secondary Students Category after showcasing its Android application that teaches users about MIB. The students won $3,000 for the achievement.
Other teams will be presenting projects named “Higher Education Guidance System”, “Brunei History Adventure Game”, “Wadihah Haji & Umrah Application”, “MiSC (Media & In-Service Centre), “iRop”, “Mindplus Islamic Knowledge” and “FoodFuel”
According to AITI, each winner of APICTA award from Brunei’s teams will be given a grant of $50,000 by AITI to further develop and enhance their product into a marketable commercial product. The 2nd prize or Merit Award winner will be given a grant of $25,000.
Brunei’s executive member representatives at APICTA committee are Hj Yahkup Hj Menudin, Chief Executive of AITI and Pg Abd Ghani Pg Metussin, the Chairman of IFB who will be attending the APICTA 2013 event and annual APICTA General meeting too.
Brunei also sends five representatives as APICTA 2013 Judges at the competition in different categories. Last year, Brunei emerged with five awards: one winner and four merit awards across different categories.
