LITERATURE helps to promote and strengthen the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB), said a scholar yesterday at a seminar that discussed the national philosophy of Brunei.

Associate Professor Ampuan Dr Hj Brahim Ampuan Hj Tengah, who was one of the speakers discussing the progress of MIB during the reign of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, spoke about the historical and contemporary importance of literary to MIB.

“This is what sets apart literary and non-literary works. Literary work is a product based on experience and the life of its author as an individual and their surroundings. Therefore, literary works mirror or are a reflection of the author’s society,” the associate professor said.

He cited the examples of the Syair Awang Semaun, the Hukum Kanun, and the Salasilah Raja-Raja Brunei as proof that MIB is not a new concept and that the Salasilah Raja-Raja Brunei shows that the national philosophy has been practised by Malay society since the 15th century.

“Several literary texts have recorded for instance the Islamisation of the first Sultan of Brunei, Adat Istiadat Diraja Brunei (Brunei royal ceremonial customs), administrative law and Bruneian society. All of this provides us with an understanding of our history and nation that later on produced a realisation of our historical background, while fostering a sense of love for our nation, while safeguarding and adopting noble values.”

The associate professor alluded to several works by local writers that touched on the values embodied by His Majesty and the people of the country. Among the themes mentioned were the importance of Islamic values, loyalty to His Majesty, and Malay values.

“It can be seen that these works, may they be by writers of the past or the writers of today, ... have indirectly and indefinitely strengthened the concept of the Malay Islamic Monarchy,” he said.
