58 shortlisted for Ignite semi-finals

FIFTY-EIGHT executive summaries out of 144 submissions the Ignite 2013 Entrepreneurship Challenge have been short listed for the semi-finals.

Of the 58, 20 made it under the College and University Category, 24 in the Open Category and 14 from the International Category.

Dr Hjh Mona Yati DSLJ Hj Md Kassim, iCentre’s Manager for Strategic Partnerships stated that “The competitiveness from the contestants have reached higher levels. We are happy to see that the teams have used the tools and techniques and business knowledge that they gained from the two-day boot camp...There are some great business ideas being pitched in the sessions - ideas that are innovative and have real monetisation potential,” she added.

She also mentioned the teams business plans are being polished with greater market validation and their communication and presentation skills have been more apparent.

With the panel of adjudicators comprising industry experts, university representatives and corporate partners of iCentre, most had positive comments of this year’s participation.

Hj Minorhadi Hj Mirhassan, the Head of Institutional Banking at Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD), stated that “Ignite is an excellent outlet for young Bruneian entrepreneurs to be able to put their ideas on paper and look at the growing business on a global scale, not just the local scale”.

Julainah Hj Ali Ahmad, Assistant Chief Executive, ICT Industry Development Group, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI) of Brunei Darussalam commented, “The competition is an outstanding opportunity for early stage entrepreneurs to showcase their ideas and inventions.

“Most of the entries were very competitive, having strong commercialisation plans to hit the global market. I look forward to seeing their products innovating our lifestyle in the near future,” she added.

This year the award has attracted partnerships with BIBD, AITI and UBD as award partners along with the support of Brunei Economic Development Board. iCentre encourages the participants to look out for the announcement of shortlisted finalists, which will be revealed on November 21. The final adjudication of the Ignite 2013 Entrepreneurship Challenge will take place at iCentre on December 3 while the award ceremony on December 5.
