Brunei UNIFIL peacekeepers return from Lebanon
BRUNEIAN peacekeepers to Lebanon were welcomed by their families, superiors and peers at the Rimba airbase yesterday.
The 20 personnel returned home after completing their tour of duty to help maintain peace and stability in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force (UNIFIL) Mandate.
The contingent, led by Major Mohd Salleh Hj Ismail, departed on October 15 last year and joined the Malaysian Batallion Five (MALBATT5) in the Arab country.
Member of the Brunei contingent Staff Sergeant Erdy Fadillah Mohd Yusof was happy to be back home to see his family after a year of duty in Lebanon.
He was a patrol commander during their time there and said that it was a challenging task which included adapting to the four seasons. He now returns to duty with the Special Forces Regiment.
Meanwhile, Sergeant Tuty Eady Wanna Hj Brahim was also delighted to see her parents and family again. She helped to treat patients with the medical unit during their tour there.
She recalled that it was difficult when they first arrived there as they had to adapt to the different languages and culture, but said that they gradually built up an understanding with the community there.
The rest of the contingent includes Captain Hj Nafisal@Dedy Hj Salim, Staff Sergeant Awg Rozain Pungut and Sergeant Zaul Kernain Mohd Noor.
Also making the team were Corporal Aswandy Hj Jumat, Corporal Zalddani Hj Hamdan, Corporal Mohd Azri Hj Othman, Corporal (U) Pg Shaiful Bahri Pg Hj Metussin, Corporal Supandi Liman, Corporal Sahlin Hj Ibrahim, Corporal Muhd Fadhlan Mohd Noor Ariffin, Corporal Kamariah Hj Abu Bakar, Corporal Raimi Masri, Lance Corporal Abdul Razak Simpul, Lance Corporal Musyiri Omar, Lance Corporal Johaibe Asnan, Private Irwan Baha and Private Mohd Rahimen Zakaria.
Commander of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Aminuddin Ihsan Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin and other senior officers from the Ministry of Defence and the RBAF were also present to welcome the contingent yesterday.
Brunei has been part of the UNIFIL Peacekeeping mission since 2008.
