His Majesty presents certificates to 148 new UNISSA graduates

UNIVERSITI Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) held its third Hafl al-Takharruj (convocation) at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas yesterday.

Some 148 graduates received their certificates from His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, UNISSA Chancellor.

Also in attendance was His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

The third convocation by the university saw an increase of 15 from last year's convocation, where 133 received their certificates. The first convocation was held in 2011 with 149 graduates.

This year, certificates were given to a doctorate, 20 masters graduates, 110 degree graduates, 10 postgraduate diplomas, and seven diploma recipients. 16 graduates hailed from 13 countries.

In his opening remarks, Acting Rector UNISSA Pengiran Anak Dr Hj Amiruddin Alam Shah Pengiran Anak Hj Ismail noted that the development of academic staff is an effort to uplift the status of UNISSA.

The academic staff are the main assets that will contribute to improving the quality and image of the university. He noted that there are 45 local academics at UNISSA. With 14 holding doctorates, nine undertaking doctoral programmes and 10 who will begin their Doctorates next year.

He said that the education of local academics is inline with the UNISSA Strategic Plan 2009-2018, which has set a target to have 70 per cent of the academic staff with doctorates.

The acting rector added that in order to realise the vision of UNISSA as a known name globally, the university has become a member of the Islamic Universities League, which includes 110 reputable universities from around the world.

While regionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) have been signed with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Indonesia’s Institut Studi Islam Darussalam (ISID), Gontor to host a Seminar on Islamic Higher Educational Institutions (SeIPTI) which UNISSA will be hosting in December.

He said the university hopes to play an important role in research and publication of Islamic knowledge. He explained that the resolution from the “Al-Quran in the Globalisation Era” organised by the Faculty of Usuluddin, UNISSA in September was to create a research centre for Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah.

“The center is expected to become one of the hallmarks of this university which can provide a wide range of disciplines centered on the teachings of the Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah, ” he said.

In addition, the acting rector explained that to aid the academic curriculum they are planning to establish a training institute on Syariah Law. He said that in principle the establishment of this institute was approved by the special panel for the implementation of the Syariah Penal Code.

For the purpose of public understanding of the Syariah Penal Code, the university has taken the initiative to organise workshops and roadshows.

These events involving legal practitioners and the relevant institutions, and were open to the public was held in September.

He also mentioned various activities and initiatives the university has held to increase Islamic knowledge. Activities by the university not only help the academic teaching staff but are also to develop the students.

The acting rector also noted the achievements the students such as Al-Quran recitation in mosques and prayer halls, working on programmes with related government departments and reading programmes within their university.

Following the speech, His Majesty also delivered a titah on the negative response of the Syariah Penal Code and a proposal for a UNISSA campus in Temburong.

After the ceremony His Majesty took group photographs with all the graduates and then took the time to take photographs with the students before leaving the ICC.

The ceremony was also attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Hjh Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade attending her daughter-in-law’s graduation, Dewi Norlelawati Haji Abdul Hamid, spouse of Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Mohammed Al Mokhtar.
