Mukim sports foster close ties

UNITY and cooperation among the people can be encouraged through sports, said a community leader yesterday.

During the launching of the Brunei-Muara District Mukims Sports Competition the Penghulu of Mukim Serasa Major (Rtd) Hj Johari Hj Abd Razak, said that aside from encouraging people to be fit – physically and mentally, sports competition can also promote unity and cooperation.

Jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) and the Ministry of Home Affairs, the event was held at the Multipurpose Hall, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, Berakas.

Present to do the honours were Brunei-Muara District Officer Hj Jamain Hj Momin and spouse, Dr Hjh Jamilah Hj Mohd Yusof.

The sports meet which will run until early December this year will see a match-up of residents from all mukims in the district in 10 types of sports.

These sports will be badminton, netball, dart, futsal, ping-pong, sepak takraw, traditional silat, tarik kalat, gasing and Pasang.

Winners of these contests will be chosen to represent Brunei-Muara in the national level of the competition, which will be held sometime during mid-December.

Each mukim sent two strong teams in for the Under 18 and Open categories.

The launch of the Mukims Sports Challenge was initiated with a netball tournament which saw the participation of eight mukims namely Mukim Kota Batu, Mukim Mentiri, Mukim Gadong A, Mukim Gadong B, Mukim Serasa, Mukim Sengkurong, Mukim Berakas A and Mukim Berakas B.

At the end of the day, prizes were awarded by the district officer’s wife Dr Hjh Jamilah for the Under 18 category. Mukim Serasa was named the overall champion followed by Mukim Kota Batu and Mukim Berakas A respectively.

While in the open category, Mukim Berakas A came in first followed by Mukim Mentiri and Mukim Gadong B.
