Safety key to preventing fires

THE Fire and Rescue Department and the Royal Brunei Police Force have the same vision of prevention according to a senior official from the Fire and Rescue Department during a course on Fire Extinguishers recently.
Senior Superintendent Hj Janaidi Hj Gunong, Fire and Rescue Department Operation ‘F’ Branch Commanding Officer spoke during the closing of the course for the Royal Escorts, Royal Brunei Police Force which started on October 24, at the Tumasek Fire Station.
“Emergency response has become the philosophy of operation between the Fire and Rescue Department and the Royal Brunei Police Force, although the method of approach is different,” he said.
He said “you can’t predict disasters and it is our responsibility to prepare our respective departments.”
Knowledge and experience, he added, is required to face any possible type of danger.
“Training is not only to save lives and property at the time of the fire but also increase the capacity and confidence of the participants.”
He added that the participants will be in the frontline as first responders before the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Department.
The course was organised by the Operasi ‘F’ Division to ensure participants are able to be first responders in the event of a fire and perform an immediate evacuations to protect the general public.
Over 100 participants were taught different aspects of fire safety. They were also taught the theories about the main task of the Fire and Rescue Department which is run in accordance with the Fire and Rescue Department Fire Act.
The course covers the nature of fire, types of fire extinguishers and fire classes, the process of evacuation, emergency action plans, as well as, practical training procedures such extinguishing a small fire extinguisher.
The participants also had the chance to do basic training and use fire-fighting equipment normally used during large fires by the fire brigade.
Instructors to the programmes were Public Relations Officer of the Fire and Rescue Department and the Tumasek fire station Commander and Operation ‘F’ Branch Public Relations Unit.
