His Majesty administers oath to new judicial commissioner

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam presided over the swearing-in of a new judicial commissioner to the Supreme Court at Istana Nurul Iman yesterday.

Justice Michael Peter Burrell will serve a three-year term as a judicial commissioner. He will also sit in the Court of Appeal, along with Justice John Barry Mortimer and Justice David John Leonard.

Justice Burrell, who has been a high court judge in Hong Kong since 1995, said he was very pleased to continue his career in Brunei.

“It’s a new jurisdiction, there are a lot of things to learn so I will do that with interest, and spend as much time to do the job as well as I can,” he said.

The ceremony began with the reading out of the letter of appointment by the Grand Chamberlain, YAM Pengiran Penggawa Laila Bentara Istiadat Diraja Dalam Istana Pengiran Hj Alauddin Pengiran Paduka Tuan Pengiran Hj Abu Bakar.

Justice Burrell then recited the oath before His Majesty and senior members of the Brunei Judiciary, including Chief Justice Dato Seri Paduka Hj Kifrawi Dato Paduka Hj Kifli; Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Hjh Hayati Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Hj Mohd Salleh; and President of Court of Appeal Justice John Barry Mortimer. Also present were HRH Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah.
