High Court to hear toddler murder case

THE married couple charged with the death of a three-year-old girl will have its case heard at the High Court.

Md Firdaus Hamid and Masnani Hj Masri are charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder of their adopted child. The court document states the crime allegedly occurred between September 13 and 14.

The charge under Section 304 (2) of the Penal Code carries a sentence of up to 15 years in jail and an unspecified fine. Both the accused are unrepresented, and have yet to enter their plea.

During the proceedings yesterday, presiding judge Senior Magistrate Hj Nabil Daraina granted Deputy Public Prosecutor Shamshuddin Hj Kamaluddin, who was assisted by Pg Suzana Pg Hj Abas, application for the case to be remitted to the High Court.

The court has set further mention of the case for November 9 at the Magistrates’ Court should there be no available dates at the High Court.

Meanwhile, Md Firdaus indicated he would apply for his wife to be released on bail before the High Court to allow her to take care of their children.

Following the arrest of the couple on September 15, the police have identified the child’s parents as well as uncovered the weapon that was allegedly used.- Syazwan Sadikin
