Ex-employee gets 20-month jail for stealing

AN EMPLOYEE of AV Electronics has been sentenced to 20 months in jail after she pleaded guilty to stealing from her employers and colleagues.

Sunarti Ibrahim, 23, was employed by AV Electronics in Kiulap as a logistics administrator from December 21, 2010 until July 11 this year. The accused was responsible for carrying out stock checks, as well as receiving new deliveries of items during her employment.

Some time in June, another employee discovered a shortage in the number of their Apple products such as the iPod Touch 4th Generation, iTunes Gift cards and the iPod Touch 5th Generation.

An internal investigation was carried out and revealed that Sunarti was responsible for the missing products, and was immediately reported to the police.

Police investigations then revealed that on different days between June 2012 and June of this year, Sunarti took three sets of Apple iPod Touch 4th Generation, three sets of Apple iPod Touch 5th Generation and eight Apple iTunes Gift cards from the store.

All the items had been paid for using store credit belonging to various customers amounting to $2,844.

Investigations further revealed that Sunarti had sold the three sets of iPod Touch 4th Generation to a shop in Kiulap for $350, and the three sets of iPod Touch 5th Generation to buyers on Facebook for $470. Meanwhile, all the Apple iTunes Gift cards were used by Sunarti to buy game apps for herself.

She was also found to have taken $3,500 from the store’s cash register on different occasions between January 2012 and June this year.Sunarti also admitted to taking money from her colleagues’ bags which were kept inside the shop’s storeroom which she had used of personal purposes.
