MEMBERS of the Legislative Council (LegCo) held a Doa Kesyukuran ceremony to celebrate the success of the 34th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Assembly which Brunei hosted on September 17-23 this year.

The ceremony took place at the Banquet Hall of the Legislative Council Building.

LegCo Speaker Yang Berhormat Pehin Dato Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Hj Awg Isa Pehin Datu Perdana Menteri Dato Laila Utama Hj Awg Ibrahim, was present as the guest of honour.

Volunteers who had contributed their time and energy during the 34th AIPA General Assembly were among those invited to the ceremony.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Isa, in his speech, highlighted two aspects of the Assembly, which he said was important to the country although it “would normally be seen as insignificant” to others.

The first one being the official song which had been updated to reflect the achievements and changes the organisation has made since its establishment in 1978.

The second was on the hoisting of the official AIPA flag which fluttered with the flags of the other AIPA countries and the flags of the dialogue partners.

“To me, these two matters pose as heartwarming and meaningful tributes to the history of this country, especially since this is Brunei’s first time managing an event of this scale since joining AIPA as a fully fledged member in 2009,” said YB Pehin Dato Hj Awg Isa.

The LegCo Speaker also expressed his thanks to the committee members from the ministries, institutions, and volunteers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB) for their contribution during the 34th AIPA General Assembly.
