A NEW book on Brunei’s national philosophy of Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) is set to hit the bookstores following an agreement inked with the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP) yesterday.

Written in the Malay Language by Pehin Jawatan Luar Pekerma Raja Dato Seri Utama Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain Hj Serudin, the book titled Anugerah Kefahaman Melayu Islam Beraja (Malay Islamic Monarchy: Gift of Wisdom) provides a commentary of how the Sultanate implemented the MIB concept.

The book picks up from the author’s previous work, Melayu Islam Beraja: Suatu Pendekatan (Malay Islamic Monarchy: An Approach), that was published in 1998.

“My latest book was written in such a way that it is easy to understand for all,” said Pehin Dato Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain, adding the book’s wide appeal was intended for the general public, particularly the younger generation.

He began writing the book after retiring as Religious Affairs Minister, explaining there was a need for more reading material on MIB.

Plans are also under way to translate Anugerah Kefahaman Melayu Islam Beraja into English in a bid to promote Brunei’s national philosophy on a global scale. The author anticipated his second book would be used by international academics as a credible source on MIB.

Priced at $15 per copy, the 166-page book contains two chapters that describe significant topics on the MIB concept including written constitutions, Malay culture and Adat Istiadat

Pehin Dato Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Hj Aminah Hj Momin, Director of DPB, allowing the government agency to publish his book. The signing took place at the author’s residence in Kg Lambak.

Hjh Aminah lauded the author’s contribution to MIB in his efforts to uphold the national philosophy as well broadening its exposure to the world.

She revealed that the DBP was also in talks with the Ministry of Education to distribute Anugerah Kefahaman Melayu Islam Beraja to schools across the country. “It’s important that students have access to this book,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, the Head of Publishing at DBP also expressed confidence that the layman’s approach adopted by the author will enable more readers to understand the MIB concept.

“This book is a great achievement not only for the people, but also the nation. I say so based on the rationale that books and discourse related to the MIB philosophy need to be published and distributed to widen the exposure to the community and younger generation,” said Mohd Azurin Othman.

Writing about philosophy, he said, can be viewed as an attempt to build a strong foundation towards developing solidarity in the nation and state.

He commented that Pehin Dato Dr Ustaz Hj Mohd Zain’s new book will serve as “implementative contextual interpretation” on the meaning and detailed understanding of MIB components, highlighting the importance of “embracing MIB on a contextual basis”.

Having observed and read Anugerah Kefahaman Melayu Islam Beraja, he felt that the writing intended to promote a social ethos rooted in MIB amid the rising influence of globalisation.

“(The book) takes its readers back to a social wisdom describing what the people should do to uphold the integrity of the institution of monarchy as well as system of government, community and country,” said Mohd Azurin.
