Tutong ecstatic on meeting HM
THE birthday celebrations of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in Tutong yesterday was commemorated by eager participants, flag wavers and well-wishers from all walks of life.
The Brunei Times had the opportunity to meet some of them during the meet and greet session held at the Community Hall Complex Field Area.
Nurul Azirah Mohd Suhaimi from the Brunei Iban Association said, "It was a privilege to be able to meet His Majesty."
Dressed in full Iban clothing and accessories, she said the event was the first where she represented a different culture.
"I used to take part by waving flags when I was at school, but now that I've completed my studies, I decided to participate with a different concept," said the 17-year-old.
Mohd Isam Aswandy, a Tutong youth representative, shared that he has been performing for His Majesty's birthday celebrations for the past nine years. "It is quite an honour for me to be chosen nine years in a row. I am happy to be able to contribute and represent the youths in Tutong," said the 25-year-old.
Anastasia Rait and Nur Irdina Abdullah, students from Pertama Primary School, were also very excited to see His Majesty.
"I want to wish His Majesty a happy birthday. It has been quite a happening event for me," said 11-year-old Anastasia.
Meanwhile, Mohd Ariffaqih Hj Yassin, 15, from Mahad Islam Brunei said it was his third time participating in the flag waving, saying that they practised three times "because the organisers wanted to make sure that we know our positions once His Majesty passes by".
Tutong District Scout Commissioner, Burhanuddin Hj Md Daud, stated that the scouts has been participating in the annual meet and greet session event annually.
"This year, representing the Tutong Scouts are 40 members. We want to wish His Majesty a happy 66th birthday," he said, adding that currently there are 150 scout members registered in Tutong, and counting.
