HM to attend Islamic economic meet

HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam arrived yesterday in Kuala Lumpur to attend the Sixth World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) which opens today.

His Majesty is expected to deliver a titah at the opening ceremony and attend the official luncheon.

On arrival at the Subang Airforce Base, His Majesty was greeted by Datuk Seri Anifah Hj Aman, Malaysian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Halbi Hj Md Yussof, High Commissioner of Brunei to Malaysia. Themed "Gearing for Economic Resurgence", the forum is set to attract more than 3,000 participants, including heads of state, prime ministers, ministers, civil servants, economists, captains of industry and businessmen from the Muslim and non-Muslim world.

During the two-day forum at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, special addresses will also be given by Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade, Indonesian President Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Kosovo President Dr Fatmir Sejdiu, Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a session to be moderated by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.

The WIEF is a platform where world leaders in government and business converge to discuss trade and economic issues affecting the globe and has been regarded as an ideal avenue where change agents and policymakers rub shoulders with one another.

Organisers said the sixth WIEF is poised to be the ultimate business meeting place for investors, fund managers, entrepreneurs, bankers and other stakeholders of the business community.
