Rice project gets 4,900ha boost

MORE than 4,900 hectares of new land has been identified and allocated in all of the four districts for the rice initiative in achieving self-sufficiency, the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources said yesterday.

YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar said this in response to YB Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Hj Othman Uking's question of new lands for the rice initiative during the sixth Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting.

During the meeting, the minister listed all of the rice field areas which have been allocated for the initiative.

Brunei-Muara has a total of 620 hectares allocated in Batong (170 hectares), Pancur Murai (150 hectares), Junjungan I and Limau Manis (200 hectares) and Junjungan II area (100 hectares).

Meanwhile, Kuala Belait has the largest land allocation totalling up to 2,500 hectares in Lubuk Sengkuang (700 hectares), Labi Baru (260 hectares), Buau (1,000 hectares) and Kandol (600 hectares).

Temburong has been allocated a total of 680 hectares in Selapun (200 hectares), Senukuh (80 hectares), Lakiun and Perdayan (400 hectares).

Meanwhile, Tutong has a total of 1,087 hectares allocated in Tanjong Maya (44.88 hectares), Payag Lubuk Gusi, Kg Bakiau (40 hectares), Pengakalan Mau (48.88 hectares) and Sukun (955 hectares).

Additionally, the Agriculture and Agri-Food Department will also be improving the farming infrastructure in all the identified areas, said the minister.

He added that in the Brunei-Muara District, Wasan will be improving its drainage water system and the roads leading to the rice field. This will be similarly done to the Berbuloh, Batong, Junjungan I and Limau Manis and Junjungan II areas.

In Kuala Belait, the minister said Sengkuang will also have its area cleaned and the river at Sg Rampayoh deepened, while the roads and drainage water system will also be improved.

For Tanjong Maya in the Tutong District, the main road at Pengkalan Mau and Paya Lubuk Gusi in Kg Bakiau will also be given similar treatment.

YB Pehin Dato Hj Yahya said that requests have been made to the Ministry of Development through its Public Works Department for carrying out the cleaning process.

Other areas which will have drainage cleaned include Jalan Kecil in Bukit Barun; Kg Biong; and Paya Lubuk Gusi in Kg Bakiau.

Meanwhile, for Temburong District, the agriculture development area of Lakiun Perdayan will see improvements in its road and drainage at the rice fields, while Selapun will have its areas cleaned and construction of roads leading to the rice field and irrigation system will be carried out.
